Education Initiative

Primary School Desks

Fancy Yarns Australia is proud to run an education initiative dedicated to supporting the next generation of yarn crafters in Australia.

Inspiring the next generation of crafters

One stitch at a time

Our education initiative provides pre-primary, primary and secondary educational institutes with a discount on yarn purchases to incorporate yarn into their arts curriculum. This addresses 'fibre crafts' featured in the Australian curriculum from Foundation to Year 2. We also encourage teachers to explore fibre crafts in Years 3 to 10.

Our yarns specifically address the Australian Curriculum’s cross-curriculum priority of sustainability as well as the general capabilities of critical and creative thinking, numeracy, personal and social capability, ethical understanding and intercultural understanding.

As part of our initiative, we consult with teachers to provide them with the knowledge they need to educate their students.

We are also happy to discuss running virtual or in-person workshops to talk about sustainability in fibre crafts.

At Fancy Yarns Australia, we know the incredible impact yarn crafts has on our mental well-being. We are passionate about teaching young people yarn crafts from an early age as a way to explore their creativity, challenge themselves and practice mindfulness.

We are also aware of the need for slower fashion. Teaching yarn crafts encourages students to understand what goes into making a garment and empowers them to participate in slow fashion for themselves and for loved ones.

We acknowledge the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, the traditional custodians of the land on which we operate. We also acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands where we ship orders - from the Wunambol peoples to Nuenonne peoples and everyone in between. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. We hope yarn can play an important role in weaving a pathway of reconciliation
